Summary of IPSEZCON 2023

The 30th Annual Conference of the Indian Pharmacological Society, West Bengal, in conjunction with the Eastern Zonal Colloquium, IPSEZCON2023, featured an exciting lineup of presentations and discussions on various facets of pharmacology and therapeutics. The event, which was held on March 10th and 11th, 2023, at the Auditorium Hall, Veterinary Council of India, West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences, fostered knowledge exchange and collaboration among experts in the field.

The conference was inaugurated by the President of IPS,Dr Shivprakash Rathnam in presence of past president Prof S K Bandyopadhyay, Prof Suhrita Pal,Vice Chancellor West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Prof T K Mandal, Vice Chancellor West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences and president IPS west bengal branch, Prof B Kalakumar, general secretary, IPS ,DrS S Samajdar, General Secretary IPS,West Bengal branch, Dr shivaji Bhattacharya, organizing secretary of the conference and prof B Medhi, editor in chief,IJP .With an impressive turnout, the conference attracted a total of 113 registered participants from different institutions of medical, veterinary, pharmacy and life science from west bengal, Assam, Odisha, Bihar and Tamil nadu including esteemed researchers, practitioners, and scholars. These participants enriched the event with their diverse perspectives and expertise.

Day 1: March 10, 2023

The conference commenced with a series of insightful presentations and discussions, including: The symposiums on SMART use of antibiotics featured discussions on AWaRe Classification: A Way Forward, Migraine drug targets, Developing an Antibiotic Stewardship Program: Challenges & Solutions, Polypharmacy & Deprescribing The prestigious P. K. Debnath Oration by Dr. R. N. Acharya was a significant highlight of the day.

The Inauguration and a networking Lunch followed the symposiums, setting the stage for a stimulating afternoon. The afternoon sessions featured symposiums on Diabetes Therapeutics, including discussions on Insulin initiation, Incretin Pathway, and Diabetic Kidney Disease, with presentations by eminent speakers.

The day continued with orations by prestigious Dr. B. Mukherjee oration delivered by Dr Shivaprakash Rathnam and prestigious Dr. A. K. Chakrabarty, delivered by Dr Jyotirmoy Pal addressing contemporary pharmacological topics.

The symposiums on Current Therapeutics featured discussions on Type 1 Diabetes prevention, Migraine drug targets, Biologics in Asthma, Immune Check Point Inhibitors, and JAK inhibitors in Rheumatoid Arthritis. The day concluded with a symposium on New Drug Development, including talks on Preclinical Drug Journey, First-in-Human Dosing,Preclinical Toxicity Studies, and Herbal Pharmacology, focusing on anti-hepatitis B drugs and natural therapies.

Day 2: March 11, 2023

The second day of the conference began with a buffet Breakfast followed by Original Research Paper Presentations highlighting the latest pharmacological research. There were 22 captivating oral presentations and many of the oral presentations were exceptional and deserving of recognition. As a token of appreciation, three outstanding presenters received awards and a cash prize of Rs. 1000/- each. These accolades highlighted their outstanding contributions to the conference.

The symposiums on Environmental Health & Pharmacology explored the roles of microbes, insects, and arsenic in environmental xenobiotics, as well as drug disposal. Next, the focus shifted to Toxicology in Drug Discovery, covering topics such as Toxicokinetic, PB-PK Modeling, and Genotoxicity Studies. The discussions continued with a symposium on Clinical Pharmacology & Patient Care, touching upon topics like COPD care, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, and Cushing Syndrome.The conference took an interactive turn with the exciting Pharmacology Quiz, led by Dr. Avijit Hazra.

Afterward, there was a Lunch break with a poster display and evaluation. A total of 12 thought-provoking poster presentations enriched the conference, showcasing a wide array of pharmacological studies, projects, and discoveries. These presentations served as visual platforms for participants to convey their research to a broader audience, and during the poster sessions, participants engaged in meaningful discussions and networking. As a token of appreciation, three outstanding posters received awards and a cash prize of Rs. 1000/- each. These accolades highlighted their outstanding contributions to the conference. The symposiums on Clinical Research Ethics & Designs delved into NDCTR 2019 takeaways, observational studies, and adaptive clinical trial designs. Further discussions on Therapeutics Considerations in Special Situations covered drug-induced disorders, Vitamin D in cardiovascular health, and pediatric dosing.

The conference concluded with a symposium on Recent Updates in Pharmacology & Therapeutics, exploring antibiotic resistance, heart failure management, and biosimilar development. Finally, a Panel Discussion on the "Future of Pharmacology" featured expert panelists and a moderated discussion on the direction of the field.

IPSEZCON 2023 proved to be an enriching and collaborative event, bringing together pharmacology enthusiasts to explore the latest advancements and future prospects in the field, with the recognition of outstanding presenters and a total of 113 registered participants, 22 oral presentations, and 12 poster presentations contributing to its success.
